Starlink Speeds Restored in Ukraine Following Contested SpaceX Restrictions
Satellite internet service across Ukraine has returned to full operational speed following more than a week of severe connectivity disruptions, according to Ukrainian officials. Elon Musk confirmed that his company, SpaceX, had purposely placed limits on the Starlink system after asserting that Ukrainian forces violated terms of service by launching offensive military strikes.
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy announced on social media that network speeds began recovering overnight. The satellite technology remains essential to Kyiv’s defense against Russia, supporting frontline troop communications, logistical operations such as food and water distribution, and defenses against Iranian-made Shahed drones.
“The most important thing today is that Starlink and Starshield operations have been restored to the speeds we had before the restrictions,” Zelenskyy said. “The speeds are now where they need to be.”
Dispute Over U.S. Government Role
The temporary slowdown triggered sharp political friction over who directed the network limits. Appearing on NBC’s Meet the Press on Sunday, Zelenskyy attributed the throttling to a “message from [the] American government,” suggesting Washington ordered the restrictions. Musk offered a different rationale on social media platform X, explaining that SpaceX acted independently to enforce civilian usage rules.
“Using Starlink, a civilian commercial service, for offensive drone strikes to kill people has never been allowed, nor should it be,” Musk stated, adding that a loophole was closed after Ukraine used the network for offensive strikes. He noted that the government-controlled Starshield platform operates under separate U.S. Authority, while acknowledging that Starlink remains so critical that Ukraine’s frontline would “collapse immediately” without it.
The Trump administration denied directing any changes to Starshield access. President Donald Trump defended the tech executive, saying, “Elon will never do anything wrong. I know him very well. He’s a fair person.”
The conflicting accounts drew criticism from Capitol Hill. Democratic Senator Adam Schiff called on Sunday for Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth to testify before the Senate if Democrats gain control in upcoming midterm elections, arguing that congressional oversight is required to clear up contradictions between the White House and SpaceX.
Frontline Operations and Regional Developments
Ukraine’s Defense Ministry verified on Saturday that monitoring systems registered full restoration of both Starlink and Starshield connections. Defense Minister Yevhen Khmara credited the turnaround to direct discussions held by Zelenskyy, adding that connectivity remained stable for defensive interceptors and projectiles moving at speeds above 250 mph. In public remarks, Zelenskyy expressed gratitude to President Trump, Congress, the State Department, and the American public.
The satellite resolution coincided with intense activity elsewhere along the front lines. On Saturday, Ukrainian forces targeted a chemical plant in Tolyatti, Russia, while a Russian drone strike sparked a fire at a residential building in Kyiv’s Obolon District.
Meanwhile, Russian and Ukrainian representatives established a localized ceasefire in the Russian-occupied southern city of Oleshky. According to the White House, First Lady Melania Trump helped broker the agreement, which establishes humanitarian aid corridors and civilian evacuation routes to address a worsening food crisis inside the city.
